@jive.shot BTS - Dojo Cut Cover and Key

Window, Garage, legendary Dojo Studios…. light is light. This is a quick breakdown of a go to lighting set up.

The idea is to outshoot the ambient light and add a key light on top to pop the subject. I love shooting under 200SS because it allows me to have more control of the ambient light, more control over contrast, shadows and on top of that I don’t need HSS and I don’t need a ton of power so regardless if it is reflected light, an AD200, AD300, Pro Foto or Speedlight or flashpoint I can operate by the same principals. If you are interested in learning more dont hesitate to reach out. The gems are free.

AS A PARENT EVERYTHING YOU DO IS FOR YOUR CHILDREN. MY MORNINGS ARE ABOUT THE TIME I GET TO SPEND WITH MY SON AND DAUGHTER, MY NIGHTS FILLED WITH THEM, EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I CHECK ON THEM PROBABLY MORE TIMES THAN I NEED TO. FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS I SPEND TIME THINKING ABOUT WHO THEY WILL BE WHEN THEY GROW UP. SOMETIMES THEY WILL BRING ME FLOWERS OR SHOW ME THE MARBLE BRIDGE THAT THEY BUILT AND I JUST PRAY I SEE ENOUGH YEARS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAGNIFICENT INDIVIDUALS THEY WILL BECOME.

SHELAN CALLED ME AND SAID HIS MOMS BIRTHDAY WAS COMING UP. THAT HE DIDN’T HAVE ANY PICTURES WITH HER IN A WHILE AND WANTED TO GIVE HER SOMETHING TO REMEMBER.

THESE ARE SITTINGS THAT MEAN SOMETHING TO ME. PORTRAITURE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A PICTURE. IT IS A STORY, SOMEONE ELSE’S STORY. TO TELL SOMEONES STORY FOREVER IS A BLESSINGS AND GIFT.  THIS SITTING WAS ABOUT A MOTHERS GIFT AND THE GIFT A MOTHER IS. IT IS A STORY ABOUT THE STRENGTH OF FAMILY AND HOW FORTUNATE WE ARE TO CONTINUE TO HAVE TIME TO CELEBRATE EACH OTHER.

Unfuckwitable - Kobe Bryant

_DSC8861.jpg _DSC8879.jpg _DSC8890.jpg _DSC8896.jpg

But I love this quality of people, that as they grow and mature and become better at their skill and their craft they become undeniable. Right? To have the skill and not just have talent, because talent is cool to have. But to develop that talent into this skill and then develop that skill and turn it into almost what feels like…. what we dare to call ART.

Uptown Theatre

Uptown Philly back again... I drive by the Uptown Theatre all the time and it’s almost invisible today... People would hide in the bathroom to see extra shows. The Uptown theatre rivaled Harlem’s Apollo Theatre and DCs Howard Theatre.

RnB, Blues, Jazz and Gospel ran the show. 2240 North Broad was the center of music in Philadelphia performers lined up ten a day to perform, out doing each other with swag and dance moves. The Supremes played for 10 days, for $400.

Comedians like Red Fox graced the stage. Movies played, Civil Rights leaders gathered and led the community in the demand for equal rights. During the 70s-80s North Philadelphia witnessed a closing of factories, a rise of drugs and gang violence. The changes in the community and music industry made Uptown a dangerous and financially difficult place to book. Gone were independent record stores, the rise of booking agencies and integrated audiences priced out Uptown and priced in Atlantic City’s and New York’s larger venues.

Today the UEDC is turning the Uptown Theatre into a community hub once again. A technical center with 200+jobs for the youth and members of the community. Media outlets of film classes, art education youth classes, and office space will congregate in the Uptown Theatre.

It’s cool to think a place that housed the Supremes, Redd Fox and discovered Darrell Hall will continue to develop and create creatives.

What We Idolize...

DSC_9565-2.jpg

The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl... which is great and all because I became a Birds fan around week 6 this year.

I have never heard more E-A-G-L-E-S, fly-eagles-fly, f-brady chants in my life. In a city where sports are celebrated, athletes idolized, and fans have a penchant for crude and outlandish behavior there are few questions to why The Link has a court and a jail inside the stadium.

My questions are:

Where do we loose ourselves?

What does this mob mentality do to us as an individual?

Why do we crave destruction, feel an obligation to record all of it and celebrate in the destruction of a city we are so proud to celebrate?

This is beyond sports, its beyond a Super Bowl celebrations and parade festivities.

This is kids in fights, homeless people looking for help, the monetization of reality... people in their worst moments, this is "world star!!!!"

Why are we so removed from humanity that we can justify hatred, cruelty, and bigotry because of nationality, race, sexuality, identity.

How long can we stand by and watch destruction of City Hall, Broad Street, People falling 30 feet to pavement, people going hungry, kids not getting the education they need, single mothers not getting the services they need, human beings from other countries being labeled and discriminated against because we are use to "documenting at a distance" and are numb to the compassion and sympathy that being a person should require.

Just my thought on this one.

Christmas In Center City

_DSC1298.JPG

If there is one tradition I could leave my son it would be kindness.  Keeping this tradition on a daily basis is obviously the goal, but every year at Christmas time we deliberately do something for others.  The idea is that it is significant, requires planning, preparation and most importantly joyous execution.

This year we handed out 100+ dinners, carried them throughout Philadelphia and handed them out to people in need.  Edward needed food and we had some, he also got a wave goodby from my son and some Insomnia cookies and milk.  I wish I could do more, I wish we all could do more. But at the end of the day Edward said "God Bless" and when it boils down to it thats what we all need.
